New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using these treatments must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
